Things To Do To Help Your Dog Get Through A Few Days At A Boarding Kennel

No matter how much you love your dog and think of it as family, you may need to board it at a kennel for a few days. Unfortunately, this can be very stressful and traumatic for your pet. You cannot explain to a dog that you are leaving for a few days but will be back and take it home with you again. However, there are things you can do that will make the whole experience less painful for everyone involved, including you.

Have a Play Date

Part of the stress for your dog will be that it is going to a place it does not know with strange people. To help with this, schedule a day or two that you can take your pet to the kennel to spend some time with you there. This way, the place will be more familiar as will the people. If you have enough time, perhaps you can leave the dog for a few hours after you have had a couple of visits together. This will let your dog know that you will come back to get it.

Take Familiar Things

Another way to help your dog feel comfortable is by taking things from home to the kennel. This should include its food dish, bed, and a favorite toy or two. You may also want to take a shirt or something that smells like you. Your dog will feel more comfortable being able to smell you. In addition, make sure you take its food and also any medications it may need while you are gone.

Prepare Yourself

If you are stressed and upset about leaving your dog, it will sense this and feel uneasy too. Until your pet sees you again, in a better, more relaxed state, it will be stressed. While it can be very difficult to remain calm and relaxed during the drop-off, it is important that you do so. In addition, it is best to wait to pack things until you have dropped the pet off so it does not see the packing and know that something is going on. If you pack first you may notice the dog is running around, following you, getting all worked up because something is different. This will only make the drop-off more stressful.

If you have checked out the kennel, one like New Beginnings K9 Training, LLC, and know that your dog will be well taken care of while you are gone, relax. Whatever your reason for leaving needs your attention so you can get back home feeling good and ready to play with your dog again, stress-free.
